THE SHORT ANSWER
Schema markup can help machines identify entities, properties and relationships and can make pages eligible for supported search features. Use the most specific applicable vocabulary, keep it consistent with visible content and follow the consuming platform's rules. Google states that no special schema is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Valid markup does not guarantee rich results, rankings or AI citations.
Structured data labels information already on the page
Schema.org supplies shared types and properties; search platforms decide which markup they consume and for what features. JSON-LD, Microdata and RDFa are syntaxes. The markup should identify the page's real subject, not introduce claims readers cannot see.
For example, Article and BreadcrumbList can describe an article and its place in a site. Product or Event markup has different required properties and policies. Choose a type because it represents the content and has a supported use, not because an audit tool rewards its presence.

Separate established search uses from AI speculation
| Claim | Evidence status |
|---|---|
| Markup can help a search engine understand structured page information | Established in official search guidance |
| Supported markup can make a page eligible for a rich result | Documented, with no guarantee of appearance |
| Google AI Search requires special AI schema | Contradicted by current Google guidance |
| Adding schema guarantees an assistant citation | Unsupported |
| More schema always improves visibility | Unsupported and potentially misleading |

Keep markup accurate, specific and maintainable
- Represent visible content faithfully.
- Use the most specific applicable type.
- Provide required properties for the intended supported feature.
- Keep dates, prices and availability synchronized.
- Avoid fake reviews, hidden claims and irrelevant entities.
- Validate syntax and monitor platform guidance.
A technically valid block can still be misleading or irrelevant. Validation proves syntax and some policy conditions; it does not prove page quality or selection.

Fix the source before expanding the labels
If important text cannot be accessed, the page conflicts with its canonical, or the claim lacks evidence, additional markup does not solve the primary problem. Start with content, access and consistency, then add structured data that has a clear consumer and maintenance owner.
