THE SHORT ANSWER
Original research can make a source more useful and reference-worthy because it adds evidence others may analyze, compare or cite. Useful forms include transparent surveys, experiments, proprietary datasets, expert interviews, case studies, benchmarks and systematic observations. Publish the method, sample, definitions, limitations and underlying evidence where possible. Originality improves contribution; it does not guarantee rankings or AI citations.
Originality should mean contribution, not novelty language
A survey can reveal a population's reported experience; an experiment can estimate an effect under defined conditions; a dataset can expose patterns; an interview can preserve informed judgment; a case study can document one context. These are different forms of evidence and should not be described as interchangeable proof.
Google's current guidance encourages unique, expert-led and non-commodity content for Search, including generative experiences. The broader editorial reason is independent: other people can inspect and build on a contribution that has a visible origin.
Evidence & context: Google Search Central
Begin with a question and a method
| Form | Useful for | Limit to disclose |
|---|---|---|
| Survey | Reported views or behavior in a sampled group | Sampling, wording and nonresponse |
| Experiment | A causal comparison under controlled conditions | External validity and implementation |
| Proprietary dataset | Patterns in operational records | Coverage, definitions and access bias |
| Expert interview | Reasoning and contextual experience | Perspective is not prevalence |
| Case study | Process and outcome in one setting | No automatic generalization |
| Benchmark | Comparable performance under a protocol | Task and metric dependence |
Make the evidence reusable and challengeable
- State the research question before the conclusion.
- Describe who or what was observed and how.
- Define metrics and exclusions.
- Separate results from interpretation.
- Publish limitations and conflicts.
- Provide tables, instruments or data where responsible and lawful.
- Correct material errors visibly.
A chart without definitions is difficult to verify. A percentage without its denominator is easy to repeat incorrectly. Design the publication so a careful reader can understand what the result does and does not establish.
Turn thought leadership into a learning programme
OpenSkool can invite practitioners to contribute documented decisions, corrections and bounded observations, then connect them to durable explainers. A smaller credible finding is more useful than an impressive invented benchmark.
Use AI content marketing to connect contribution to audience need, and verification to review consequential claims.
