THE SHORT ANSWER
No. Search systems still need to discover, process and evaluate web information, and people still use results to navigate, compare and act. AI answers can reduce, redirect or create visits depending on the query. Modern search strategy should keep technical and editorial SEO while also measuring answer visibility, source references, brand discovery, qualified traffic and conversion.
The mechanism persists even when the interface changes
Google says its generative Search features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. It retrieves information from its search index for generated responses and requires supporting pages to be indexed and eligible for a snippet. That makes search fundamentals part of the new interface rather than a discarded predecessor.
This does not mean every established tactic retains equal value. A position can receive fewer visits when an interface resolves a simple question, while a detailed source can gain attention for a complex comparison. The effect depends on query, presentation, audience and purpose.

Expand the objective without abandoning rankings
| Objective | Observable evidence | What it cannot prove alone |
|---|---|---|
| Ranking | Position for a defined query and context | Attention or business value |
| Answer visibility | Appearance in a named feature or sampled response | Market-wide exposure |
| Source reference | Link or citation in an observed answer | Endorsement or visit |
| Brand discovery | Branded demand, mentions or direct visits | Which exposure caused it |
| Traffic and conversion | Sessions and accepted outcomes | All influence that occurred before the click |
Keep work that solves a real discovery constraint
- Make important pages reachable and indexable.
- Match content to a real question or task.
- Use specific titles, headings and internal links.
- Provide accurate, original and maintained information.
- Build legitimate reputation and references.
- Measure outcomes beyond impressions or sessions.
Discard activities that exist only because a tool labels them optimization. The test is whether the work improves access, understanding, trust, retrieval or value for a defined audience.
Treat death narratives as strategy shortcuts
Declaring an established discipline dead creates urgency but avoids the harder work of identifying which queries, interfaces and outcomes changed. A more useful review compares the old assumptions with current evidence and reallocates effort accordingly.
