THE SHORT ANSWER

SEO improves discovery through search systems and search results. AEO emphasizes becoming a clear, reliable answer in direct-answer experiences. GEO emphasizes usefulness and visibility in generative responses. The labels overlap in technical access, relevance, clarity, evidence and authority. Treat them as lenses for one discovery strategy, not three independent algorithms.

Compare the emphasis, not an imagined boundary

SEO, AEO and GEO as working terms
TermPrimary emphasisShared foundationsImportant limit
SEOVisibility and usefulness in search systems and resultsAccess, relevance, quality, authority, experienceIt is broader than ranking one blue link
AEOClear answers in answer-oriented interfaces and featuresIntent, concise explanation, evidence, structureIt is not synonymous with FAQ pages
GEOUsefulness in generative retrieval and responsesRetrievability, clarity, source value, authorityDefinitions and system behavior vary

Different practitioners use AEO and GEO differently. Name the actual interface, audience and outcome when precision matters rather than assuming the acronym carries one accepted method.

Most useful work improves more than one surface

A crawlable page with a direct definition, specific evidence, descriptive headings and a clear source can support a conventional result, a rich answer and a retrieved passage. Accurate entity information and relevant internal links can help people and machines navigate the same body of knowledge.

Google's current position is explicit: for its generative Search features, AEO and GEO work remains SEO. Other platforms may use different indexes, crawlers, retrieval partners and interfaces, so do not transfer that statement into a universal claim.

Evidence & context: Google Search Central

Acronym-led plans can hide the real problem

  • Adding answer boxes to content that does not match a real question.
  • Creating separate near-duplicate pages for SEO, AEO and GEO.
  • Buying visibility claims based on secret or unverified ranking factors.
  • Adding schema or an AI text file without fixing access or source quality.
  • Reporting mentions, rankings and conversions as if they were interchangeable.

Translate every proposed tactic into a mechanism and a measurable hypothesis. Ask what system can access, what user need it serves and which observation would show improvement.

Plan one discovery system

Start with the questions and decisions that matter to the audience. Build the best available evidence and explanation, make it technically accessible, connect it to a coherent topic, and measure both visibility and business outcomes. Use an acronym only when it helps identify a missing part of that system.
