THE SHORT ANSWER
Google currently describes AI Overviews as generated summaries for queries where they add value and AI Mode as a conversational experience for exploration, reasoning and comparison. Both can show supporting links and may issue related searches through query fan-out. Other search and assistant products differ. Content still needs strong technical access, relevance and value; there is no separate Google AI schema requirement.
Use current names with a date attached
| Interface | Documented emphasis | Publisher implication |
|---|---|---|
| AI Overviews | A generated overview when systems judge it additive to classic Search | A source may appear as a supporting link |
| AI Mode | Exploration, nuanced questions, reasoning and comparisons | Discovery can continue across follow-ups |
| Classic and rich results | Links and specialized result features | Existing search foundations still apply |
Availability and presentation can differ by query, user and region. Recheck the official documentation before making platform-specific plans.
Evidence & context: Google Search Central
One visible question can create several retrieval tasks
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out: multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources. A page can therefore be relevant to a supporting question even when it does not repeat the user's exact wording.
The practical response is topical completeness with distinct useful pages, not one enormous page or a set of wording variants. Cover the decisions, evidence and relationships a person needs to understand the subject.

Prepare for interfaces, not just snippets
- Make key information available in text.
- Use images and video when the task benefits from them.
- Connect related pages through descriptive internal links.
- Keep business and product facts current.
- Provide source depth that rewards a visit.
- Preserve a clear next action when the reader arrives mid-journey.
Google explicitly says no special AI text file or special schema is required for these features. Fix foundational access and content value before adding experimental layers.

Do not build the plan around one interface snapshot
Map audience questions and information assets independently of product names. Then observe how important interfaces present them today. This keeps the strategy useful if a feature is renamed, combined, limited by region or replaced.
