THE SHORT ANSWER

Assess performance through agreed outcomes, quality, relevant behavior, capability, consistency and context. Use proportionate metrics alongside work samples, feedback and conversation; identify support and development needs, then document clear commitments and consequences.

Performance is more than one number

A balanced performance review
DimensionQuestion
OutcomeWhat useful result was achieved?
QualityDid the work meet the required standard?
BehaviorHow were commitments, collaboration and boundaries handled?
CapabilityWhat can the person do independently, and what is developing?
ConsistencyIs this a pattern or an isolated event?
ContextWhich resources, dependencies or changes affected the work?

Use metrics with purpose and limits

Activity volume can reward busyness, rankings can conceal role differences and surveillance can distort behavior. Choose measures connected to outcomes, inspect distribution and quality, and document where managerial judgment enters.

Manage performance continuously

  1. Set a fair outcome and standard.
  2. Provide resources and authority.
  3. Observe relevant evidence.
  4. Discuss progress and context.
  5. Coach, develop or correct.
  6. Record commitments and review.
  7. Use formal processes where required.

Distinguish development from formal employment action

Regular coaching and fair performance conversation are management practices. Formal warnings, discipline, accommodations, promotion and termination require applicable policies and jurisdiction-specific advice.
