THE SHORT ANSWER
Marketing analytics is the disciplined use of data to understand marketing activity, customer behaviour and business outcomes so a team can decide what to do next. Measurement records signals, reporting describes them, analysis investigates patterns, and interpretation connects evidence to business context.
A decision discipline, not a reporting product
A report can show that traffic fell. Analytics asks where it fell, what else changed, which explanations fit the evidence and whether the change matters to the business. Decision-making then chooses an action, owner and review point.
The same dataset can support different decisions. A finance team may need realized contribution; a campaign team may need early qualified demand; a product team may need journey failures. Start from the decision rather than collecting every available field.
Separate measurement, reporting, analysis and interpretation
| Job | Question | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement | What can we observe consistently? | Defined events, transactions and attributes |
| Reporting | What happened? | Reconciled trends and comparisons |
| Analysis | Where and how did it happen? | Patterns, segments and competing explanations |
| Interpretation | What does it mean here? | A conclusion with assumptions and uncertainty |
| Decision | What should we do next? | Action, owner, guardrail and review |
Use QUESTION → MEASURE → ANALYZE → INTERPRET → DECIDE
QUESTION defines the business choice. MEASURE identifies observable evidence. ANALYZE locates patterns and differences. INTERPRET weighs context, alternative explanations and uncertainty. DECIDE commits to an action and a way to judge it.
Begin with a decision sentence
- We need to decide whether…
- The outcome that matters is…
- The strongest current evidence is…
- A plausible alternative explanation is…
- We will act by… and review when…
Continue with metrics, KPIs and outcomes, then build the relationship into a measurement framework.
