THE SHORT ANSWER

Backups are recoverable copies of important data or configuration. Define which operations are critical, how much recent data could be lost, how quickly service must return, where independent copies live, who can restore them and how restoration is tested.

Prioritize critical operations

  • Identify systems and data required to operate.
  • Document dependencies, credentials and owners.
  • Protect backups from ordinary admin compromise.
  • Test representative restoration.
  • Plan manual or reduced service where possible.
  • Update the plan after system changes.

Recovery is more than files

A database copy may not restore identity, application configuration, vendor access or customer communication. Test the complete business capability.

Turn guidance into an owned business action

Choose one relevant account, system, data set or workflow. Record the owner, current control, most important failure, detection signal, response step and recovery dependency. Escalate specialist, legal or regulatory questions to qualified advisers for the applicable context.
