THE SHORT ANSWER

Students should learn enough about AI to understand its limits, frame worthwhile problems, check evidence, protect people and evaluate outputs. Tool fluency helps, but it should sit alongside subject knowledge and independent reasoning rather than replace them.

Start wider than prompt-writing

UNESCO's student framework covers four dimensions: a human-centred mindset, ethics of AI, AI techniques and applications, and AI system design. Its progression moves through understanding, applying and creating. It offers a wider educational starting point than memorising instructions for one product.

OpenSkool's proposal is to connect those dimensions to work a student can explain and defend. The following activities are suggestions for learning, not a tested curriculum or a prediction of future employment.

Subject knowledge gives you something to check against

A student who knows the assumptions behind a formula is better placed to question a generated calculation that uses it in the wrong setting. A student who has read the original passage can notice that a summary changes the author's argument. These examples show what it means to use knowledge as a check, not just as material to reproduce.

An activity might begin with a student's unaided explanation, introduce an AI-generated alternative, and end with a revised explanation and reasons for each change. Keep all three versions. The changes reveal more than the polish of the final paragraph.

Good learning also depends on the conditions

UNESCO's education guidance puts human agency at the centre of decisions about generative AI. In practice, schools and learners need to consider access, privacy, age suitability and the purpose of an activity. Follow your institution's rules and the tool's applicable terms rather than assuming all uses are appropriate.

A student without a paid tool should still be able to practise evaluating an answer. A teacher can supply an example for the whole class to inspect. Assess the quality of the reasoning rather than access to the latest interface.
